Toyota is the best-selling brand in Canada, and the RAV4 is the best-selling SUV, so it is no surprise that "Toyota extended warranty" is one of the most-asked questions we get. The reason is not that Toyotas break — they don't, much. It is that Toyota owners keep their vehicles. A Corolla or a Tacoma that will be driven to 300,000 km spends most of its life outside the factory warranty, and the parts that fail late in a Toyota's life are the expensive ones: hybrid inverters, turbocharged 2.4-litre engines, multimedia units, radar and camera modules.

What does the Toyota factory warranty cover in Canada?
These are Toyota's Canadian terms — Canadian kilometres, not American miles, which is where most online confusion about "toyota warranty" comes from.

When does the Toyota factory warranty actually run out?
At the Canadian average of roughly 20,000 km a year, the two limits arrive together: the basic warranty ends at three years and the powertrain warranty at five. Drive 25,000 km a year and the basic warranty is gone at about two years and five months, the powertrain warranty at four. A Toyota bought new in 2021 and driven normally is out of powertrain coverage in 2026 — which is precisely when the calls start.
The hybrid numbers are generous and worth knowing: on a 2020-or-newer RAV4 Hybrid or Prius the battery itself is covered to 10 years or 240,000 km. An extended plan on a Toyota hybrid is therefore mostly about everything else — the same components as on the gas version, plus the inverter and hybrid transaxle after year eight.

Toyota's own extended coverage is Extra Care Protection, sold through Toyota dealers in several tiers (from powertrain-only up to near-factory comprehensive coverage). It is good coverage. Its trade-offs are the ones every manufacturer plan carries: repairs go to a Toyota dealer, it is usually bought in the finance office at delivery or while the factory warranty is still in force, and it is priced by the dealer selling it, so the same plan can cost different amounts at two stores. If you are already at the dealership buying the vehicle and the price is right, it is a reasonable choice.

Both are legitimate. The right one depends on whether you bought new or used, where you want the work done, and whether the dealer's price is competitive — which is exactly what a second written quote tells you.
What tends to be expensive to fix on a Toyota?
These are the repairs Toyota owners most often ask us about once the factory coverage has ended. They are common enough to plan for, not inevitable, and the costs are typical Canadian ranges for parts and labour — your shop and your region will vary.

Safety recalls are repaired free by Toyota regardless of warranty status and are not listed here. Pre-existing conditions — a fault that already exists when coverage is bought — are excluded on every extended-warranty program, which is why coverage is arranged before symptoms appear. Turbocharged Toyotas (the 2.4 turbo Highlander, Grand Highlander and Tacoma) carry a small mandatory turbo surcharge on our programs.
What does a Toyota extended warranty cost in Canada?
Programs price vehicles by class, and Toyota rates in class 1 of four — the lowest-priced group. These are current example prices for a Toyota in that class, rounded, one-time purchase plus tax:

Which Toyota models do we quote?
Any Toyota that meets the program's age and kilometre limits qualifies. Does Toyota offer an extended warranty in Canada?
Yes — Toyota Extra Care Protection (ECP), sold through Toyota dealers. You can also buy an independent extended warranty on a Toyota at any point, including after the factory warranty has expired; independent plans are honoured at any licensed repair facility in Canada rather than at Toyota dealers only.
Is an extended warranty worth it on a Toyota?
If you will keep it past five years or 100,000 km, usually yes — not because Toyotas fail often, but because the failures that do happen on a modern Toyota (hybrid electronics, turbo components, multimedia and sensors) are expensive, and Toyota owners tend to keep their vehicles long enough to meet one.
