Who is iA Dealer Services?
iA Dealer Services is the dealer-products division of iA Financial Group, a Canadian insurance and wealth management group founded in 1892.
Which document you get depends on your province. In British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, the plans are mechanical breakdown insurance policies from Industrial Alliance Pacific General Insurance Corporation. In Manitoba, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island, they are vehicle service contracts issued and administered by SAL Marketing Inc., an affiliate of Industrial Alliance Pacific General Insurance Corporation, out of Vancouver. Claims are handled by iA's own claims administrator at 1-888-444-0301, and roadside assistance runs 24/7. If you have seen the names SAL Protection Plan or Companion Extended Warranty on an older contract, that is the same administrator.
Which iA programs do we quote?
Four, each built for a different kind of vehicle.
| Program | Coverage style | Built for |
|---|---|---|
| Auto Mechanical Assistance | Exclusionary, one plan, you pick the claim limit | Most gas and hybrid vehicles; quick to quote; terms from 3 to 48 months |
| Prime Protection | Listed-component tiers: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Top-Up, Platinum | Drivers who want to pay only for the systems they care about; high-kilometre vehicles on Bronze |
| Auto Premium | Listed-component tiers up to Superior, which is exclusionary | Newer vehicles; the claim-free rebate; High-Tech package included on Superior |
| Extended Warranty for Electric Vehicles | Exclusionary, Superior or Superior Wrap | Battery-electric vehicles, with high-voltage battery coverage |
Most drivers fit one clearly. EVs go to the EV program. Most gas and hybrid vehicles go to Auto Mechanical Assistance. We reach for Prime Protection when the kilometres are high or the budget is tight, and Auto Premium when the vehicle is newer and the customer wants Superior coverage with the rebate.
What does Auto Mechanical Assistance cover?
Everything mechanical and electrical on the vehicle except the items on the exclusion list.
There is one plan, and you choose two things: the term (3, 6, 12, 24, 36 or 48 months) and the claim limit. Claim limits run from $1,250 per repair visit and $2,500 in total up to $10,000 per visit and $20,000 in total, with $2,500/$5,000 and $5,000/$10,000 the common middle choices. The per-visit limit is also capped at the vehicle's Canadian Black Book value, and the total at what you paid for the vehicle.
| Auto Mechanical Assistance | |
|---|---|
| Deductible | $100 per repair visit (12 to 48 months); $150 on 3- and 6-month terms |
| Kilometre eligibility | 160,000 km or less for 12- to 48-month terms; no cap on 3- and 6-month terms |
| Coverage start | New vehicles: when the factory warranty expires, so the term stacks. Pre-owned: contract date, with a 30-day no-claims period if bought after the vehicle |
| Options | 24/7 roadside and rental; seals and gaskets; diagnostics up to $100 per claim; High-Tech Basic (8 components) or Deluxe (24 components) |
| Roadside and rental option | Boost, tire change, fuel delivery, lockout, towing up to 50 km, 5 events per contract; rental $50 a day up to $250 per repair |
| Business use | Single-driver light commercial use with a surcharge. Lift kits, oversized tires and other modifications aren't covered |
| Transfer | Once, to a private buyer, within 30 days, $100 plus tax; term must be 12 months or longer |
The High-Tech Deluxe package is worth a look on anything built in the last decade: it adds the touchscreen, navigation, cameras, blind-spot and lane-departure modules, adaptive cruise, park-assist sensors, keyless entry and the Wi-Fi module, none of which the base plan covers.
What does Prime Protection cover?
The systems on the level you choose, starting with the powertrain and hybrid drive on Bronze and building up to Platinum.
| Level | Adds | Deductible |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | Engine, transmission, differential and transfer case, hybrid components (propulsion battery capped at $5,000) | $100 |
| Silver | Seals and gaskets, turbocharger, supercharger | $100 |
| Gold | Air conditioning, electrical, brakes, steering, suspension, fuel injection | $100 or $150 by term |
| Top-Up | Gold plus the Electronic High-Tech group; new vehicles only, from the factory warranty start date | $150 |
| Platinum | Everything above plus the expanded engine, transmission, electrical, cooling and fuel groups, and first-hour diagnostics | $150 |
Gold/Silver is a split-term version that runs Gold for the first part of the term and Silver for the rest. A zero-deductible option is available on every level. Electrical, air conditioning and Electronic High-Tech can be added to lower levels.
24/7 roadside assistance is included on every level (boost, tire change, fuel delivery, lockout and towing up to 50 km, five events per contract). Rental at $50 a day up to $250 per repair and trip interruption at $100 a day for up to 3 days when you break down more than 150 km from home are included on Top-Up and Platinum and optional on the other levels. Prime Protection is where a high-kilometre vehicle lands: Bronze has no kilometre cap, and Silver takes vehicles up to 180,000 km.

Get My Free QuoteWhat does Auto Premium cover?
Listed components on Basic, Preferred and Classic; everything except the exclusion list on Superior and Superior Wrap.
| Level | Covers | Pre-owned eligibility |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | Engine, turbo or supercharger, transmission, transfer case, drive axle | Up to 9 model years old, 160,000 km |
| Preferred | Basic plus steering, brakes and ABS, electrical, air conditioning, fuel system (pre-owned only) | Up to 9 model years old, 160,000 km |
| Classic | Preferred plus suspension, cooling and enhanced electrical | Up to 9 model years old, 160,000 km |
| Superior | Exclusionary, with the High-Tech Deluxe package included | Up to 4 model years old, 100,000 km |
| Superior Wrap | Superior coverage around a factory powertrain warranty of at least 5 years or 100,000 km; converts to full Superior when it expires | Factory powertrain warranty still active |
Deductible is your choice of $100, $200 or $300 per repair visit. Claim limits are set on the contract, capped at the vehicle's Black Book value per visit and its purchase price in total. Every level includes 24/7 roadside (five events per contract), rental at $50 a day up to $250 per repair, trip interruption at $100 a day for up to 3 days beyond 150 km from home, and an emergency repair allowance of up to $500 when the claims office is closed. The optional claim-free rebate returns up to $1,500 of the contract price if you never claim.
What does the iA EV warranty cover?
The high-voltage battery and the electric drive, plus the rest of the vehicle on an exclusionary basis.
The Extended Warranty for Electric Vehicles has two levels. Superior covers the high-voltage battery and cables, inverter and converter, drive motor and generator, battery management and control modules, on-board charger, DC-DC converter and battery cooling, and then transmission, drive axle, steering, brakes, electrical, air conditioning, suspension, cooling, enhanced electrical, the High-Tech Deluxe package and every other part not on the exclusion list. Superior Wrap is the same coverage arranged around a factory battery warranty of at least 5 years and 100,000 km, and converts to full Superior when that expires.
| iA Extended Warranty for Electric Vehicles | |
|---|---|
| High-voltage battery | Covered, up to $5,000, unless you add Upgraded Battery Coverage to raise the cap to the limit you choose (may be pro-rated by age and kilometres at claim time) |
| Claim limits | $2,500 per visit / $5,000 total up to $10,000 per visit / $20,000 total |
| Deductible | Your choice of $0, $100, $200 or $300 per repair visit |
| Eligibility | Pre-owned EVs up to 8 model years old and 100,000 km; new EVs with factory warranty remaining |
| Terms | Pre-owned: 12 to 60 months. New: up to 120 months or 200,000 km |
| Home charger | A new residential charging station (up to 220 volts) bought with the vehicle is covered for repair or replacement |
| Benefits | 24/7 roadside (five events), rental $50 a day up to $250 per repair, trip interruption $165 a day for up to 3 days ($500) beyond 150 km from home, one software update up to $500 per term, emergency repairs up to $500 |
| Not covered | The 12-volt battery, tires and TPMS, and gradual capacity loss within the manufacturer's normal range for the battery's age and kilometres |
How battery claims work is worth understanding before you buy. If the pack fails, iA repairs or replaces it with a new, upgraded or equivalent pack whose capacity is within the normal range for a battery of that age and kilometres. It restores the vehicle to a working, age-appropriate condition rather than to new.
What isn't covered?
Wear items, maintenance, damage from outside causes, commercial use, and anything that was already wrong when the contract was bought.
All four programs exclude brake pads, rotors and drums, the 12-volt battery, tires, wipers, belts, hoses, filters, fluids, spark plugs, bulbs, fuses and scheduled maintenance. All four exclude collision, fire, flood, rust and corrosion, pre-existing conditions, lack of maintenance, modified or aftermarket parts, racing, and body, paint, glass, trim and upholstery. Taxi, rideshare, delivery, plowing, towing for hire and multi-driver business use are not eligible on any program; single-driver light commercial use is allowed with a surcharge. Listed-component levels cover what is on their list, so read the list before you pick one.
How does a claim work?
The shop calls iA before it starts, iA authorizes the repair, and iA pays the shop.
- Stop driving if carrying on could cause more damage, and get the vehicle to a licensed repair facility. Report the breakdown to iA within 15 days.
- Give the shop your contract number. The shop calls iA claims at 1-888-444-0301 for an authorization number before any teardown or repair.
- iA confirms coverage and agrees the cost with the shop. On a major failure it may ask for an inspection or a teardown, which you pay for only if the failure turns out not to be covered.
- The shop does the authorized repair. You pay the deductible; iA pays the shop the rest. The shop's paperwork goes to iA within 60 days.
Repairs done without authorization are not covered. Auto Premium and the EV program allow one exception: an emergency repair of up to $500 when the claims office is closed, reported within five business days.
We'll tell you if iA isn't the fit
We don't sell to Quebec residents. iA classes vehicles by make and model, and some makes need the administrator to confirm eligibility before we can quote. A vehicle bought before the contract needs a certified inspection by a Red Seal mechanic. Vehicles over 160,000 km lose the longer Auto Mechanical Assistance terms, and Auto Premium Superior stops at 100,000 km. If your vehicle lands outside those gates, or another provider simply rates it better, we say so and quote that instead. You'll never get an iA quote from us because it was the easy one to write.
Common questions about iA coverage
What does an iA extended warranty cover?
It depends on the program. Auto Mechanical Assistance and the Superior levels of Auto Premium and the EV program are exclusionary: every part is covered unless it is on the contract's exclusion list. Prime Protection and the lower Auto Premium levels cover the parts on their list, starting with the engine, transmission and drive axle and adding steering, brakes, electrical, air conditioning, suspension, fuel and cooling as you move up. Every program pays parts and labour on a covered repair. Diagnostic time is an add-on on Auto Mechanical Assistance and included for the first hour on Prime Protection Platinum.
Which iA program is right for my vehicle?
Fully electric vehicles go to the EV program. Most gas and hybrid vehicles under 160,000 km fit Auto Mechanical Assistance, which is exclusionary and quotes quickly. Vehicles over 160,000 km can still get Auto Mechanical Assistance on a 3- or 6-month term, or Prime Protection Bronze, which has no kilometre cap. Auto Premium Superior suits newer vehicles under 100,000 km that want exclusionary coverage with a claim-free rebate. Tell us the vehicle and current kilometres and we'll say which one rates.
Does iA cover electric vehicles and the high-voltage battery?
Yes. The iA Extended Warranty for Electric Vehicles covers the high-voltage battery, inverter and converter, drive motor, battery management system, on-board charger and battery cooling system, plus the rest of the vehicle on an exclusionary basis. Battery liability is capped at $5,000 unless you add Upgraded Battery Coverage, which raises the cap to the limit you choose and may be pro-rated by the vehicle's age and kilometres at claim time. Pre-owned EVs qualify up to 8 model years old and 100,000 km.
Are hybrids covered?
Yes. On Auto Mechanical Assistance and Auto Premium, iA automatically adds its Hybrid Electric Endorsement (form E7535E) to the contract for hybrid and electric vehicles, extending coverage to the applicable hybrid and electric components. A residential charging station is covered if it is bought at the same time as the vehicle. Auto Premium adds a hybrid surcharge. Prime Protection lists hybrid components on every level except Top-Up, including the propulsion battery, with battery liability capped at $5,000.
What is the difference between exclusionary and listed-component coverage?
Listed-component coverage names what is covered and everything else is not. Exclusionary coverage names what is not covered and everything else is. Exclusionary is closer to factory bumper-to-bumper coverage and matters most on modern vehicles full of modules and sensors. With iA, Auto Mechanical Assistance, Auto Premium Superior and Superior Wrap, and both EV plans are exclusionary; Prime Protection and the lower Auto Premium levels are listed-component.
Are brakes, batteries, tires and other wear items covered?
No. Every iA program excludes maintenance and wear items: brake pads, rotors and drums, the 12-volt battery, tires, wiper blades, belts, hoses, filters, fluids, spark plugs, bulbs and fuses, plus alignments and tune-ups. Brake hydraulics and ABS components are covered on the mid and upper levels. Also excluded across the board: collision, fire, flood, rust, pre-existing conditions, lack of maintenance, aftermarket or modified parts, racing, and body, paint, glass, trim and upholstery.
Can I use my own mechanic?
Yes, if the shop is licensed and approved by iA's claims administrator. The contracts define a repair facility as the selling dealership or a fully licensed and approved repair facility, and they exclude repairs by shops the claims administrator hasn't authorized. Have the shop call iA claims at 1-888-444-0301 before any work starts, or call first and iA will direct you to an approved shop near you, in Canada or the continental United States.
Does iA pay the repair shop directly?
Yes. For an authorized repair, iA pays the repair facility for the covered cost less your deductible, so there is nothing to pay out of pocket beyond the deductible and any taxes. The shop's paperwork must reach iA within 60 days of the repair.
How do I make a claim on an iA warranty?
Stop driving if carrying on could cause more damage, take the vehicle to a licensed repair shop, and give them your contract number. Before any work starts, the shop calls iA claims at 1-888-444-0301 for an authorization number. iA confirms coverage and agrees the cost with the shop, and may ask for an inspection or teardown on a major failure. You pay the deductible; iA pays the rest. Report the breakdown within 15 days. Repairs done without prior authorization are not covered, with one exception on Auto Premium and the EV program: an emergency repair of up to $500 when the claims office is closed, reported within 5 business days.
Will an iA claim affect my car insurance?
No. A mechanical breakdown claim goes to iA, not to your auto insurer, so it has no effect on your insurance rates or claims history.
What records do I need to keep?
Receipts for every scheduled service showing the date, odometer reading and work done. All four contracts require the vehicle to be maintained by a licensed repair facility to the manufacturer's schedule, and iA will ask for the records at claim time. Do-it-yourself maintenance is not accepted, so keep the oil changes at a shop and keep the paperwork.
Can I buy an iA warranty on a used car I already own?
Yes. Auto Mechanical Assistance, Prime Protection and Auto Premium are all sold on pre-owned vehicles, and the EV program takes pre-owned EVs up to 8 model years old. When a contract is bought after the vehicle rather than with it, the vehicle must pass an inspection first, and iA accepts a certified inspection by a Red Seal mechanic. On Auto Mechanical Assistance, Auto Premium and the EV program, no claims are accepted in the first 30 days; your Prime Protection contract shows any waiting period. We state all of this plainly in your quote.
Is there an age or kilometre limit?
It depends on the program. Auto Mechanical Assistance: 160,000 km or less for 12- to 48-month terms; 3- and 6-month terms have no kilometre cap. Prime Protection: Bronze has no kilometre cap (an extended version runs to 200,000 km), Silver takes vehicles up to 180,000 km, and Platinum is for vehicles up to 5 model years old and under 120,000 km. Auto Premium: pre-owned vehicles up to 9 model years old and 160,000 km on Basic, Preferred and Classic; up to 4 model years old and 100,000 km on Superior. EV program: pre-owned EVs up to 8 model years old and 100,000 km.
When does coverage start?
On a new vehicle with factory warranty remaining, Auto Mechanical Assistance and Prime Protection start when the factory warranty expires, so the term stacks on top. Auto Premium and the EV program count the term from the factory warranty start date on a new vehicle. Prime Protection Top-Up and Platinum No Time Limit are the exception: they count from the factory warranty start date. On a pre-owned vehicle every program starts from the contract date. On Auto Mechanical Assistance, Auto Premium and the EV program, a vehicle bought before the contract has a 30-day waiting period before claims are accepted.
Where is iA coverage valid?
Anywhere in Canada and the continental United States, for both the breakdown and the repair. The vehicle must be registered in Canada, and coverage does not apply if it is used outside Canada more than 180 days a year. We don't sell to Quebec residents, and Prime Protection and Auto Premium are not available in the territories.
How much does an iA extended warranty cost?
It depends on the program, the vehicle's make and class, the current odometer, the term, the claim limit you choose and any options such as roadside, seals and gaskets or the High-Tech package. Auto Mechanical Assistance lets you pick a claim limit from $1,250 per visit up to $10,000 per visit, which is the biggest lever on price. We quote every price plus tax, in writing, within a business day. See our cost guide for worked examples.
Is there a deductible?
Yes, per repair visit, and only one per breakdown even if the repair takes several visits. Auto Mechanical Assistance: $100 on 12- to 48-month terms, $150 on 3- and 6-month terms. Prime Protection: $100 on Bronze, Silver and Gold/Silver, $150 on Gold, Top-Up and Platinum, with a zero-deductible option. Auto Premium: your choice of $100, $200 or $300. EV program: your choice of $0, $100, $200 or $300. No deductible applies to roadside, rental or trip benefits on any program.
Can I transfer the warranty if I sell my car?
Yes, once, to a private buyer, on every iA program. The original holder sends the transfer form and $100 plus tax to iA within 30 days of the sale, along with the maintenance records for the new owner. Contracts cannot be transferred when the vehicle is sold or traded to a dealer or leasing company. On Auto Mechanical Assistance the term must be 12 months or longer to be transferable, and the claim-free rebate on Auto Premium and the EV program does not transfer.
Can I cancel an iA warranty and get a refund?
Within the first 30 days, yes: a full refund if no claim has been authorized, or the price less a $100 fee and any claims paid if one has. After 30 days the contract can be cancelled by the lender if the vehicle is a total loss or repossessed, with a pro-rated refund less claims and the $100 fee. The contract does not give the owner a general cancel-any-time right after day 30, so we tell customers to treat an iA contract as a 30-day decision.
What is the claim-free rebate?
An optional add-on on Auto Premium and the EV program. If you keep the vehicle and the contract to the end of its term and never make a claim, you can apply for the contract price back, less the rebate fee, up to the maximum shown on your contract ($1,500 on Auto Premium). Apply within 60 days of expiry on Auto Premium, or 120 days on the EV program. On Auto Premium it has a minimum term (48 months on pre-owned vehicles), it is not transferable, and the fee is not refundable after 30 days. Ask us about it if the idea of money back for a trouble-free vehicle appeals to you.

Why get iA coverage through Auto Warranty Experts?
We are operated by Sault Nissan, an Ontario-licensed, OMVIC-registered dealership, which is what lets us issue iA contracts to drivers anywhere in Canada. We quote the iA program that fits your vehicle against our other Canadian providers, check the kilometre and model-year gates before you see a number, and put the pricing in writing, plus tax, with no obligation. If your vehicle doesn't rate with iA, we say so and show you what does.
