Sym-Tech Extended Warranty Coverage in Canada

Short answerSym-Tech Dealer Services (often written Symtech) is a Canadian warranty administrator that has been in business for more than 50 years and works with over 1,200 new-car dealerships. We quote two Sym-Tech mechanical breakdown plans: i-Select Plus, an insurer-backed plan with coverage levels up to exclusionary and monthly payments available, and Drive-Ahead, which has no vehicle age or odometer restriction on its Standard and Standard Plus tiers and suits older and high-kilometre vehicles. Both are honoured at any licensed repair shop in Canada and the continental United States, and both can be transferred once to a private buyer.

Who is Sym-Tech Dealer Services?

Sym-Tech Inc., operating as Sym-Tech Dealer Services and often written Symtech, is a Canadian administrator of vehicle protection products based in Thornhill, Ontario.

It has been in business for more than 50 years, works with over 1,200 new-car dealerships across Canada, and is part of the Amynta Group, an international insurance services company. Beyond mechanical breakdown protection, Sym-Tech administers appearance, anti-theft and financial protection products for dealers. Its claims line is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. When your shop calls to register a repair, that is who answers.

Which Sym-Tech plans do we quote?

Two: i-Select Plus for newer and lower-kilometre vehicles, and Drive-Ahead for older and high-kilometre vehicles.

i-Select Plus

  • Insurer-backed. Guaranteed by Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada.
  • Four coverage levels. Powertrain, Enhanced, Preferred and Ultimate (exclusionary).
  • Seven deductibles. $0 to $500 per repair visit; you choose.
  • Claim limits tied to the vehicle. Up to its cash value per visit, up to its purchase price in total.
  • Monthly payments available. No-interest deferred payment plan.
  • Kilometre cap. Coverage ends at 240,000 km (200,000 km on Ultimate).

Drive-Ahead

  • No age or odometer restriction on Standard and Standard Plus.
  • Three plans. Standard, Standard Plus and Serenity (exclusionary).
  • Flat $100 deductible per repair visit.
  • Fixed claim limits. $3,000 total on Standard; $5,000 per claim and $10,000 total on Standard Plus; $6,000 per claim and $15,000 total on Serenity.
  • Terms up to 60 months with a 100,000 km allowance, or 200,000 km for high-kilometre drivers.
  • One-time purchase, not financeable. Optional money-back guarantee if you never claim.

Most vehicles fit one plan clearly. If your odometer leaves room under the i-Select Plus cap for the term you want, we quote i-Select Plus. If it doesn't, we quote Drive-Ahead. Either way we say which one and why.

What does i-Select Plus cover?

Whatever level you pick, from the powertrain alone up to everything on the vehicle except a short exclusion list.

Every level includes the same benefits, with no deductible on any of them.

What isn't covered?

Wear items, maintenance, damage from outside causes, and anything that was already wrong when you bought the contract.

Both plans exclude brake pads, rotors and drums, the 12-volt battery, tires, wipers, belts, filters, spark plugs, bulbs and fuses, plus scheduled maintenance like alignments and tune-ups. Both exclude collision, fire, flood, rust and corrosion, pre-existing conditions, lack of maintenance, aftermarket or modified parts, racing, and body, paint, glass, trim and upholstery. On hybrids, the high-voltage battery and its cables are excluded on every level.

Drive-Ahead has three more limits worth knowing on an older vehicle. It covers only original factory-installed parts. It excludes damage from normal wear and tear and from deterioration through normal use, which the contract says includes loss of engine compression and oil consumption, and damage not caused by a manufacturing or material defect. And it excludes commercial use of any kind; i-Select Plus can cover commercial use and snow plowing for a surcharge. Lower levels on both plans cover what's on their list, so read the list before you pick one.

How does a claim work?

The shop calls Sym-Tech before it touches the car, Sym-Tech authorizes the repair, and Sym-Tech pays the shop.

  1. Stop driving if carrying on could cause more damage, and get the vehicle to any licensed repair facility.
  2. Give the shop your contract number. The shop calls Sym-Tech at 1-888-363-1101 to register the claim before any work starts. You can make that call yourself if the shop won't.
  3. Sym-Tech confirms coverage, agrees the cost with the shop, and may ask for an inspection or a teardown on a major failure. You authorize the teardown and pay for it only if the failure turns out not to be covered; under Drive-Ahead an inspection Sym-Tech requests is at your expense.
  4. The shop does the authorized repair. You pay the deductible; Sym-Tech pays the shop the rest.

Repairs done without prior authorization are not covered. That is the one rule that catches people, and it is why we put the claims number on the contract, on this page and in your quote email.

We'll tell you if Sym-Tech isn't the fit

Some vehicles don't rate with Sym-Tech: fully electric vehicles and some rare makes and trims. We don't sell to Quebec residents. Drive-Ahead doesn't cover vehicles used for work, and neither plan covers the hybrid battery. If your vehicle is one of those, or if the kilometres left under the cap or a $3,000 Standard limit wouldn't cover the repair you're worried about, we say so and quote another program instead. You'll never get a Sym-Tech quote from us just because it's the one we know best.

Common questions about Sym-Tech coverage

What does a Sym-Tech extended warranty cover?

Mechanical and electrical breakdown of the parts listed for the level you choose. Entry levels cover the powertrain (engine, transmission, drive axle, transfer case, turbo). Mid levels add steering, brake hydraulics, electrical, air conditioning, suspension, fuel and cooling. The top levels, i-Select Plus Ultimate and Drive-Ahead Serenity, are exclusionary: everything on the vehicle is covered unless it is on the contract's exclusion list. Parts, labour and diagnostics on a covered repair are paid, and rental, towing and away-from-home benefits are included.

What is the difference between i-Select Plus and Drive-Ahead?

i-Select Plus is the insurer-backed plan with more coverage levels, seven deductible choices, claim limits up to the vehicle's value and monthly payments. Its coverage ends at 200,000 to 240,000 km on the odometer depending on level. Drive-Ahead is for vehicles outside those limits: Standard and Standard Plus have no age or odometer restriction, use a flat $100 deductible and fixed claim limits from $3,000 to $15,000, and are a one-time purchase.

What is exclusionary coverage?

The contract lists what is not covered and everything else on the vehicle is covered. It is the closest thing to factory bumper-to-bumper coverage you can buy after the fact. Sym-Tech offers it on i-Select Plus Ultimate and Drive-Ahead Serenity.

Does Sym-Tech cover hybrids and electric vehicles?

Hybrids and plug-in hybrids are eligible. i-Select Plus Ultimate covers the inverter, drive motor, generator, hybrid cooling pumps and hybrid control units; Drive-Ahead Serenity covers hybrid control modules, inverter and converter. The high-voltage battery and its cables are excluded on both plans. Fully electric vehicles are not eligible for either Sym-Tech plan; we quote EVs through a separate program.

Are brakes, batteries, tires and other wear items covered?

No. Brake pads, rotors and drums, the 12-volt battery, tires, wiper blades, belts, filters, spark plugs, bulbs, fuses and scheduled maintenance are excluded, as they are on every mechanical breakdown plan. Brake hydraulics and ABS components are covered on the mid and upper levels.

Can I use my own mechanic?

Yes, with one check on Drive-Ahead. The i-Select Plus contract allows any licensed repair facility in Canada or the continental United States, and Sym-Tech can help you find one. The Drive-Ahead brochure says any licensed shop, and its contract asks the shop to confirm with Sym-Tech that it qualifies as an authorized repair centre when it calls to register the claim, which is the same call it makes anyway. Either way, you are not tied to the dealer that sold the contract.

Does Sym-Tech pay the repair shop directly?

Yes. Once a repair is authorized, Sym-Tech pays the shop directly by corporate credit card, less your deductible. If a shop insists on payment up front, you are reimbursed for the authorized amount less the deductible. Repair paperwork must be submitted within 60 days on i-Select Plus and 45 days on Drive-Ahead.

Will a claim raise my car insurance premiums?

No. A mechanical breakdown claim goes to Sym-Tech, not to your auto insurer, so it has no effect on your insurance rates or claims history.

What records do I need for a claim to be approved?

Receipts for scheduled maintenance, especially oil changes, showing the date and odometer reading. Both contracts require servicing to the manufacturer's schedule and Sym-Tech asks for the receipts at claim time. Drive-Ahead also requires you to keep the factory warranty in force for its full term and to keep a copy of the pre-delivery inspection. Missing maintenance records are the most common reason any extended warranty claim is denied.

Can I buy a Sym-Tech warranty on a used car I already own?

Yes, on either plan. Drive-Ahead has no vehicle age or odometer restriction on Standard and Standard Plus and can be added to a vehicle you already own. i-Select Plus can also be added to a vehicle you already own, including after the factory comprehensive warranty has expired, subject to a short inspection first; we arrange it through a mobile inspection service so you don't have to go anywhere. Pre-existing conditions are excluded on both plans, which is why buying before symptoms appear matters.

Can I buy an extended warranty after the factory warranty has expired?

Yes, through either plan. Drive-Ahead Standard and Standard Plus take a vehicle years past its factory warranty; Serenity is limited to vehicles 7 model years old or newer with under 140,000 km. i-Select Plus is available after the factory warranty has expired with an inspection, as long as the odometer leaves room under its kilometre cap for a term worth buying. If factory warranty remains, Drive-Ahead starts when it ends; see the next question for how i-Select Plus counts its term.

Is there an age or kilometre limit?

Drive-Ahead Standard and Standard Plus have none. Drive-Ahead Serenity requires 7 model years or newer and under 140,000 km. i-Select Plus coverage expires when the odometer reaches 240,000 km on Powertrain, Enhanced and Preferred, or 200,000 km on Ultimate, so the kilometre allowance available shrinks as the current reading rises. We check your annual driving against that cap before we quote.

Where is Sym-Tech coverage valid?

Anywhere in Canada and the continental United States, for both the breakdown and the repair. Terms can vary by province. We don't sell to Quebec residents. Commercial use (taxi, delivery, rideshare, plowing, towing) is excluded unless a commercial surcharge is purchased on i-Select Plus.

When does coverage start?

Drive-Ahead starts the day after the factory warranty ends on a new vehicle, so the term stacks on top. On a pre-owned vehicle it starts on the later of the 31st day after you bought the vehicle or the day after factory coverage ends, and Sym-Tech needs a copy of the pre-delivery inspection. i-Select Plus counts its term in months from the contract purchase date and in kilometres from the odometer reading that day. If factory warranty is still running, repairs the factory covers are excluded until it ends, so choose an i-Select Plus term with that in mind. On a vehicle bought after the fact, coverage begins once the inspection is done and the contract is issued.

How much does a Sym-Tech extended warranty cost?

It depends on the vehicle, the current odometer, the coverage level, the term, the kilometre allowance and, on i-Select Plus, the deductible you pick. We quote every price plus tax, in writing, within a business day. i-Select Plus can be paid monthly through a no-interest deferred payment plan; Drive-Ahead is a one-time purchase and cannot be financed. See our cost guide for worked examples.

Is there a deductible?

Yes, per repair visit. On i-Select Plus you choose $0, $50, $100, $200, $250, $300 or $500; a higher deductible lowers the price. On Drive-Ahead it is a flat $100. On both plans one breakdown that takes several visits is charged one deductible, and no deductible applies to rental, towing, roadside or trip benefits. On i-Select Plus, a part already repaired under the contract carries no deductible on future repairs.

Can I transfer the warranty if I sell my car?

Yes, once, to a private buyer. The original holder sends the transfer form, the new owner's details, the odometer reading, the maintenance records and the fee ($75 on i-Select Plus, $100 plus tax on Drive-Ahead) to Sym-Tech within 30 days of the sale. Contracts cannot be transferred when the vehicle is sold or traded to a dealer or leasing company.

Can I cancel a Sym-Tech warranty and get a refund?

i-Select Plus: yes, at any time, by written request. Within the first 60 days with no claims you receive a full refund; after that the refund is pro-rated by the greater of time or kilometres used, less a $50 administration fee and any claims paid. Drive-Ahead: within 30 days of purchase if no repair has been authorized, less a $100 administration fee; after that, cancellation is available if the vehicle is declared a total loss. If the contract was financed, the refund goes to the lender first.

What is the Drive-Ahead Reimbursement Guarantee?

An optional add-on. If you reach the end of the contract without making a repair claim (roadside assistance does not count), you can apply within 30 days of expiry to get a set amount of the contract price back, up to the guarantee amount you chose. A minimum term applies. Ask us about it when you request options.

Is a Sym-Tech warranty insurance?

i-Select Plus is a vehicle service contract whose obligations are guaranteed and insured by Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada; if a covered claim is not paid within 60 days of proof of loss you can claim directly against the insurer. In some provinces this type of coverage is regulated as insurance. Drive-Ahead is an additional coverage contract administered by Sym-Tech Inc. Neither is a manufacturer's warranty. The i-Select Plus contract also asks you to raise any dispute with Sym-Tech in writing first and includes a binding arbitration clause; how that applies depends on your province's consumer law.

Why get Sym-Tech coverage through Auto Warranty Experts?

We are operated by Sault Nissan, an Ontario-licensed, OMVIC-registered dealership, which is what lets us issue genuine Sym-Tech contracts to drivers anywhere in Canada. We quote both Sym-Tech plans against each other and against other Canadian programs, check the kilometre caps against how you actually drive, and put the pricing in writing, plus tax, with no obligation. If your vehicle doesn't rate with Sym-Tech, we'll say so and show you what does.
