Mazda Extended Warranty in Canada: What the Factory Covers, When It Ends and What a Plan Costs

Short answerMazda is the one mainstream brand in Canada with no kilometre limit on its factory warranty: 3 years unlimited km on the whole vehicle, 5 years unlimited km on the powertrain, 3 years of roadside assistance and 7 years against rust perforation, on 2015-and-newer models. Coverage therefore ends on a date, not an odometer reading. Mazda's own extended plan is Mazda Added Protection through dealers; an independent plan covers the same repairs at any licensed shop. Mazda rates in our second price class — typically about $1,750 to $2,850 plus tax for multi-year coverage.

Mazda Canada's warranty is unusual enough to be worth understanding before you buy any extended coverage at all. Since the 2015 model year, "Mazda Unlimited" removes the kilometre limits: the 3-year new-vehicle warranty, the 5-year powertrain warranty, the 3-year roadside assistance and the 7-year anti-perforation warranty all run on time alone. A high-mileage driver gets more from a Mazda's factory warranty than from any competitor's.

The flip side is that the clock still runs out — at five years for the powertrain, regardless of how little you drove — and Mazdas have moved upmarket. The CX-5, CX-50 and CX-90 carry turbocharged engines, a new inline-six, plug-in hybrid systems and premium electronics, which is also why Mazda rates one price class above Toyota and Honda on our programs. Below: the factory terms, how the timing works, Mazda Added Protection versus an independent plan, and the cost.

What does the Mazda factory warranty cover in Canada?

These are Mazda's Canadian terms — Canadian kilometres, not American miles, which is where most online confusion about "mazda warranty" comes from.

Please check these terms against your own owner's manual. We do our best to keep Mazda's Canadian terms current and correct, but manufacturers revise them, coverage differs by model year and trim, and errors can happen. The warranty booklet or owner's manual that came with your vehicle is what governs your coverage, not this page — please confirm anything here against it (or with your Mazda dealer) before you rely on it.

When does the Mazda factory warranty actually run out?

Because there is no kilometre limit, a Mazda's factory coverage ends on the anniversary of its first sale: three years for everything, five for the powertrain. For a low-mileage driver that is slightly worse than a conventional warranty (a 60,000 km limit you never reach costs you nothing); for anyone driving 25,000 km or more a year it is considerably better.

The practical consequence for extended coverage: a 2021 Mazda is out of powertrain warranty in 2026 whether it has 40,000 km or 140,000 km on it — and the two are very different vehicles to insure. Mileage is what sets the price of an independent plan, so a low-kilometre Mazda coming off factory coverage is one of the better-value vehicles to cover.

Mazda Added Protection (MAP) vs. an independent extended warranty

Mazda Added Protection is Mazda Canada's dealer-sold extended coverage, with repairs at Mazda dealers using Mazda parts. It is typically purchased at delivery or while the vehicle is under the factory warranty, and priced by the selling dealer. It is a reasonable product; the independent alternative is worth pricing when you want the repair done at your own shop, when you bought the vehicle used, or when the factory warranty has already ended and the dealer's window has closed.

Both are legitimate. The right one depends on whether you bought new or used, where you want the work done, and whether the dealer's price is competitive — which is exactly what a second written quote tells you.

What tends to be expensive to fix on a Mazda?

These are the repairs Mazda owners most often ask us about once the factory coverage has ended. They are common enough to plan for, not inevitable, and the costs are typical Canadian ranges for parts and labour — your shop and your region will vary.

RepairWhat owners run intoTypical cost
Turbocharged 2.5-litre engine components (CX-5, CX-50, CX-9, Mazda6 turbo)Turbochargers, cooling-system parts and cylinder-head work on the higher-output engine are the costly Mazda repairs once the five-year powertrain warranty ends.≈ $2,000–$4,500
Infotainment (Mazda Connect) unitThe 2014–2018 Mazda Connect system is known for touchscreen 'ghost touch' and unit failures; a replacement connectivity master unit is a common claim.≈ $1,000–$2,200
Inline-six and plug-in hybrid systems (CX-90, CX-70)New in 2024, the 3.3-litre turbo six and the PHEV system are early in their service life; components outside the powertrain and hybrid coverages are premium-priced parts.≈ $2,000–$6,000
All-wheel-drive coupling, wheel bearings and brake calipersOrdinary high-kilometre wear on i-Activ AWD models, more frequent on winter-driven Ontario and Quebec vehicles.≈ $700–$2,000

Safety recalls are repaired free by Mazda regardless of warranty status and are not listed here. Pre-existing conditions — a fault that already exists when coverage is bought — are excluded on every extended-warranty program, which is why coverage is arranged before symptoms appear. Turbocharged Mazdas (the 2.5T CX-5, CX-50, CX-9 and Mazda6, the CX-90 and CX-70) carry a small mandatory turbo surcharge on our programs.

What does a Mazda extended warranty cost in Canada?

Programs price vehicles by class, and Mazda rates in class 2 of four. These are current example prices for a Mazda in that class, rounded, one-time purchase plus tax:

Coverage3 years / 60,000 km of driving5 years / 100,000 km of driving
Comprehensive — named-component coverage, $5,000 per visit≈ $1,750≈ $2,400
Exclusionary — everything not on the exclusion list, $6,000 per visit≈ $2,300≈ $2,850

Rate card effective February 1, 2026. All prices plus tax, with a flat $100 deductible per repair visit. Exclusionary coverage is available on vehicles up to 7 model years old and under 140,000 km at enrolment. Factory-turbocharged engines add $45 and diesels $75; a doubled kilometre allowance is $150. Not sold in Quebec. Your quote is for your vehicle — these show the shape of the market, not your price. Comprehensive or exclusionary — which one makes sense? NOTE: make-page prices are generated from functions/data/ratecard.js at build time — nothing to update by hand when the card changes; re-check the wording if the program structure changes

Which Mazda models do we quote?

Any Mazda that meets the program's age and kilometre limits qualifies. The ones we quote most: CX-5, CX-50, CX-30, Mazda3, CX-90, CX-70, MX-5. Trims and powertrains matter for price (turbocharged versions carry the surcharge above), so we confirm the exact vehicle before quoting — a VIN gets you there fastest.

Common questions about Mazda extended warranties

Does the Mazda unlimited-kilometre warranty apply in Canada?

Yes — it is a Canadian program. Mazda Unlimited removes the distance limits on the 3-year new-vehicle, 3-year roadside assistance, 5-year powertrain and 7-year anti-perforation warranties for 2015-and-newer models sold in Canada.

What is Mazda Added Protection?

Mazda Canada's own extended-coverage plan, sold through Mazda dealers and honoured at Mazda dealers, typically bought at delivery or while the factory warranty is still in force.

Why does a Mazda cost more to cover than a Toyota or Honda?

Because Mazda's parts and labour pricing sit closer to the premium brands than to mainstream Japanese rivals, so the programs rate Mazda one class higher. The difference on a multi-year plan is about $100.

Can I buy an extended warranty on a Mazda after the factory warranty ends?

Yes. A short mobile pre-coverage inspection is required on vehicles past factory coverage, and a brief waiting period may apply. Coverage is honoured at any licensed repair facility in Canada.

He started Auto Warranty Experts on a gap he kept seeing from the finance desk: coverage is easy to buy the day you buy the car, and two or three years later — when the factory warranty is actually about to run out — most of the market has no easy way to buy it at all. Online he can put several programs in front of one customer and shape the term, coverage and deductible around the vehicle in front of him, rather than selling whatever a single desk happens to carry. "Clients are often shocked by how affordable a warranty can be through us. That's our whole purpose." What he likes most is the long game: relationships that last, built on service worth coming back for. About the team →
