Honda sells more CR-Vs and Civics in Canada than almost any competitor sells of anything, and its owners tend to be the keep-it-forever type. That is the whole extended-warranty question in one sentence: the Distributor's Warranty is done at three years, the powertrain at five, and the average Canadian Honda then runs another decade.
Modern Hondas also carry more expensive hardware than the ones people remember. The 1.5-litre turbo in the Civic, CR-V and Accord, the nine- and ten-speed automatics in the Pilot, Odyssey and Passport, two-motor hybrid systems, and the usual screens and sensors are all reliable in the aggregate and all costly individually. Below: what Honda Canada covers, when it ends, how Honda Plus compares with an independent plan, and what coverage on a Honda costs.
What does the Honda factory warranty cover in Canada?
These are Honda's Canadian terms — Canadian kilometres, not American miles, which is where most online confusion about "honda warranty" comes from.
| Coverage | Term | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Distributor's (basic) warranty | 3 years / 60,000 km | Whichever comes first, from the warranty registration date. |
| Power Train Warranty | 5 years / 100,000 km | Takes over when the Distributor's Warranty expires; transferable to later owners on registration with Honda. |
| Hybrid system | 8 years / 160,000 km | On hybrid models. |
| High-voltage battery (EVs) | 8 years / 160,000 km | Propulsion battery pack and internal components, with degradation below 75%. |
| Rust perforation | 5 years / no distance limit | Surface corrosion is 3 years / no distance limit. |
| Roadside assistance | 3 years / no distance limit | Honda Plus Roadside Assistance; based on years, not kilometres. |

Please check these terms against your own owner's manual. We do our best to keep Honda's Canadian terms current and correct, but manufacturers revise them, coverage differs by model year and trim, and errors can happen. The warranty booklet or owner's manual that came with your vehicle is what governs your coverage, not this page — please confirm anything here against it (or with your Honda dealer) before you rely on it.
When does the Honda factory warranty actually run out?
For a driver covering 20,000 km a year the basic warranty and the kilometre limit expire together at three years; the powertrain warranty follows at five. Higher-mileage drivers hit the kilometre limits first: at 30,000 km a year, the Distributor's Warranty is gone at two years and the powertrain warranty at three years and four months.
One Honda-specific point: the Power Train Warranty is transferable to a second owner, but only if the transfer is registered with Honda. If you are buying a used Honda under five years old, ask the seller or a dealer to confirm the registration — it changes what you need to cover.

Get My Free Honda QuoteHonda Plus Extended Warranty vs. an independent extended warranty
Honda Plus is Honda Canada's umbrella protection brand; the extended warranty inside it is the Honda Plus Extended Warranty, sold by Honda dealers, with repairs done at Honda dealers using Honda parts. It is generally bought at delivery or while the vehicle is still under the Distributor's Warranty. The coverage is solid; the trade-offs are the dealer-network requirement (an issue if you move somewhere the nearest Honda dealer is an hour away, or if you have an independent mechanic you trust), dealer-set pricing, and the fact that it is easiest to buy when you are least inclined to shop it — in the finance office on delivery day.
| Honda Plus Extended Warranty | Independent plan through Auto Warranty Experts | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sells it | Honda dealers | Us — several insurer-backed Canadian programs, compared in one written quote |
| Where repairs are done | Honda dealers | Any licensed repair facility in Canada — including a Honda dealer, if you prefer |
| When you can buy it | Usually while the factory warranty is still in force | Any time — new, used, or years after the factory warranty ended (a short inspection applies then) |
| How it's priced | Set by the selling dealer | Rated by vehicle class, mileage, term and tier; quoted plus tax, held for seven days |
| Who pays the shop | Honda | The claims administrator, directly, on most plans |
| Transferable if you sell | Usually, with conditions | Yes, on the programs we quote |
Both are legitimate. The right one depends on whether you bought new or used, where you want the work done, and whether the dealer's price is competitive — which is exactly what a second written quote tells you.
What tends to be expensive to fix on a Honda?
These are the repairs Honda owners most often ask us about once the factory coverage has ended. They are common enough to plan for, not inevitable, and the costs are typical Canadian ranges for parts and labour — your shop and your region will vary.
| Repair | What owners run into | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5-litre turbo engine (Civic, CR-V, Accord, 2016 onward) | A generally durable engine, but turbochargers, fuel injectors and — in cold-climate, short-trip use — oil-dilution-related complaints have all generated out-of-warranty repair bills. Honda has extended its own coverage on some components for specific model years; check your VIN with a dealer before paying for a repair. | ≈ $1,500–$4,000 |
| Nine- and ten-speed automatic transmissions (Pilot, Odyssey, Passport, Ridgeline) | Shift-quality complaints, torque converter and valve-body work on the ZF-sourced 9-speed in particular. Rarely a full replacement, frequently a four-figure repair. | ≈ $2,500–$6,000 |
| Air-conditioning condensers and compressors | Condenser failures on 2017–2019 CR-Vs were common enough that Honda extended its coverage on them; on other models the condenser and compressor remain ordinary, and expensive, high-kilometre failures. | ≈ $900–$2,200 |
| Infotainment head unit and driver-assist cameras | Display Audio units and Honda Sensing camera modules are among the most frequent non-mechanical claims on 2016-and-newer Hondas. | ≈ $1,200–$2,800 |
Safety recalls are repaired free by Honda regardless of warranty status and are not listed here. Pre-existing conditions — a fault that already exists when coverage is bought — are excluded on every extended-warranty program, which is why coverage is arranged before symptoms appear. Turbocharged Hondas (the 1.5T Civic, CR-V and Accord, the 2.0T Civic Type R and older Accords) carry a small mandatory turbo surcharge on our programs.
What does a Honda extended warranty cost in Canada?
Programs price vehicles by class, and Honda rates in class 1 of four — the lowest-priced group. These are current example prices for a Honda in that class, rounded, one-time purchase plus tax:
| Coverage | 3 years / 60,000 km of driving | 5 years / 100,000 km of driving |
|---|---|---|
| Comprehensive — named-component coverage, $5,000 per visit | ≈ $1,650 | ≈ $2,300 |
| Exclusionary — everything not on the exclusion list, $6,000 per visit | ≈ $2,200 | ≈ $2,750 |
Rate card effective February 1, 2026. All prices plus tax, with a flat $100 deductible per repair visit. Exclusionary coverage is available on vehicles up to 7 model years old and under 140,000 km at enrolment. Factory-turbocharged engines add $45 and diesels $75; a doubled kilometre allowance is $150. Not sold in Quebec. Your quote is for your vehicle — these show the shape of the market, not your price. Comprehensive or exclusionary — which one makes sense? NOTE: make-page prices are generated from functions/data/ratecard.js at build time — nothing to update by hand when the card changes; re-check the wording if the program structure changes
Which Honda models do we quote?
Any Honda that meets the program's age and kilometre limits qualifies. The ones we quote most: CR-V and CR-V Hybrid, Civic, HR-V, Pilot, Odyssey, Accord, Passport, Ridgeline. Trims and powertrains matter for price (turbocharged versions carry the surcharge above), so we confirm the exact vehicle before quoting — a VIN gets you there fastest.
Common questions about Honda extended warranties
What is the Honda Plus Extended Warranty?
Honda Plus is Honda Canada's umbrella protection brand; the Honda Plus Extended Warranty is the extended-warranty product within it, sold through Honda dealers and honoured at Honda dealers in Canada and the United States. It is usually purchased while the vehicle is still under the factory Distributor's Warranty.
Can I buy an extended warranty on a Honda after the factory warranty ends?
Yes, through an independent program. The vehicle needs a short pre-coverage inspection, arranged through a mobile inspection service, and a brief waiting period may apply before the first claim. Coverage is then honoured at any licensed repair facility in Canada.
Is a Honda extended warranty worth it?
For an owner who keeps the vehicle past five years or 100,000 km, usually. Hondas are reliable, but the 1.5-litre turbo, the nine-speed automatic, hybrid components and the electronics are all four-figure repairs when they do fail — and Honda owners keep their vehicles long enough to see one.
How much does a Honda extended warranty cost in Canada?
Honda is in our lowest-priced vehicle class. Multi-year comprehensive coverage typically runs about $1,650 (three years) to $2,300 (five years) plus tax, and top-tier exclusionary coverage about $2,200 to $2,750 plus tax, before any turbo surcharge. Your quote depends on the exact vehicle and its mileage.

He started Auto Warranty Experts on a gap he kept seeing from the finance desk: coverage is easy to buy the day you buy the car, and two or three years later — when the factory warranty is actually about to run out — most of the market has no easy way to buy it at all. Online he can put several programs in front of one customer and shape the term, coverage and deductible around the vehicle in front of him, rather than selling whatever a single desk happens to carry. "Clients are often shocked by how affordable a warranty can be through us. That's our whole purpose."
