Tesla owners ask a different question from everyone else. The battery and drive unit — the parts a gasoline-car owner would call the powertrain — are covered for eight years. What runs out at four years or 80,000 km is everything else: the touchscreen and computer, suspension arms, door handles, the heat pump, cameras, the 12-volt system, charging hardware. Those are the parts Tesla owners actually pay for, and a Tesla out of its basic warranty is expensive to repair because the parts come from one source.
The other thing Tesla owners discover is that most extended-warranty programs will not touch them. The mainstream programs exclude fully electric vehicles outright. What does the Tesla factory warranty cover in Canada?
These are Tesla's Canadian terms — Canadian kilometres, not American miles, which is where most online confusion about "tesla warranty" comes from.

When does the Tesla factory warranty actually run out?
At 20,000 km a year the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty and its 80,000 km limit expire together at four years; at 25,000 km a year, at three years and two months. The battery and drive unit carry on to eight years — the kilometre limit rarely arrives first — so the exposure from year four is the rest of the car.
Because the factory warranty follows the vehicle, not the owner, a used Tesla's remaining coverage is calculated from its original in-service date. Check it in the Tesla app or with Tesla before buying, and before deciding what coverage you need.

Tesla began selling its Extended Service Agreement in Canada in 2023. It is bought online through the Tesla account, generally before the basic warranty ends and within eligibility limits on age and kilometres, in fixed terms of a few years, with repairs at Tesla Service. It is the only plan that will ever use Tesla-sourced parts at Tesla labour rates with no argument, and for an owner whose car is still under the basic warranty it is worth pricing. Independent EV coverage is the route when the eligibility window has passed, the car is used or higher-kilometre, or you want the option of an independent EV-certified shop — and it is the only route for most Teslas more than four years old.

Both are legitimate. The right one depends on whether you bought new or used, where you want the work done, and whether the dealer's price is competitive — which is exactly what a second written quote tells you.

Safety recalls are repaired free by Tesla regardless of warranty status and are not listed here. Pre-existing conditions — a fault that already exists when coverage is bought — are excluded on every extended-warranty program, which is why coverage is arranged before symptoms appear.
