At 20,000 km a year the warranty and its 80,000 km limit expire together at four years; at 25,000 km a year, at three years and two months. There is no second stage. A Mercedes-Benz out of its new-vehicle warranty is entirely out of warranty, engine and transmission included.
Mercedes-Benz's own extended coverage begins where the new-vehicle warranty ends — at 48 months or 80,000 km, whichever comes first — and can be purchased at any point before then, which removes the "I missed the window" problem that catches owners of other brands. It begins when the new-vehicle warranty ends and repairs are done at Mercedes-Benz dealers with genuine parts. For an owner who bought new from a dealer and services there, it is a strong option and worth a price from the dealer. An independent plan is the route for a used Mercedes-Benz (particularly one bought privately or from a non-Mercedes dealer, which the factory plan excludes), a car already out of warranty, or an owner who prefers an independent specialist.

Safety recalls are repaired free by Mercedes-Benz regardless of warranty status and are not listed here. Pre-existing conditions — a fault that already exists when coverage is bought — are excluded on every extended-warranty program, which is why coverage is arranged before symptoms appear.
