The most important thing to understand about a BMW's factory warranty is what it lacks: a powertrain term. Where a Toyota or Ford owner gets five years or 100,000 km on the engine and transmission, a BMW owner gets four years or 80,000 km on everything, and then nothing. The 12-year rust warranty is generous and almost never used. The four-year cliff is what matters.

When does the BMW factory warranty actually run out?
At 20,000 km a year the New Vehicle Limited Warranty and its 80,000 km limit expire together at four years. At 25,000 km a year the warranty is finished at three years and two months. There is no second stage: a BMW that is out of its basic warranty is out of warranty entirely, engine and transmission included.
This is the brand where "buy the coverage before the factory warranty ends" matters most. A BMW enrolled at 70,000 km with no symptoms is straightforward to cover. The same car at 95,000 km with a coolant smell has a pre-existing condition, and no program covers those.

BMW Mechanical Breakdown Protection is BMW Canada's own extended coverage for out-of-warranty repairs beyond the 4-year / 80,000 km warranty, sold through BMW retailers, with repairs at BMW retailers using original BMW parts and certified technicians, and including roadside assistance for the term. It is priced by the retailer and bought while the vehicle is under the factory warranty. It is good coverage, and for an owner who intends to keep servicing at the dealer it is worth pricing. An independent plan is the alternative for a used BMW, a car near or past the warranty, or an owner who uses an independent BMW specialist — and it is honoured at any licensed shop in Canada.

Safety recalls are repaired free by BMW regardless of warranty status and are not listed here. Pre-existing conditions — a fault that already exists when coverage is bought — are excluded on every extended-warranty program, which is why coverage is arranged before symptoms appear.
