GMC is the truck-and-SUV half of the GM showroom I worked in for twelve years: Sierra, Terrain, Acadia, Yukon, Canyon. Mechanically a Sierra is a Silverado in a nicer suit, so its warranty exposure is the same — V8 lifters, eight-speed transmission shudder, the 2.7 turbo, and, on Denali trims, a great deal of expensive electronics.

When does the GMC factory warranty actually run out?
At 20,000 km a year the Base Warranty ends at three years and the powertrain warranty at five. Sierra and Yukon owners frequently drive more, and at 30,000 km a year the powertrain coverage is finished at three years and four months. Diesel owners get an extra 60,000 km on the engine and roadside coverage, which is worth remembering when you compare a 3.0 Duramax with a 5.3 gas truck.

The GMC Protection Plan is GM Canada's own extended coverage, sold through GMC dealers within set time and kilometre limits and honoured at GM dealers across Canada and the United States. It is the same product family as the Chevrolet and Buick plans. Good coverage, dealer-priced, easiest to buy at delivery. The independent alternative fits when the vehicle is used or past the factory warranty, when you want your own shop, or when you want a second written price to compare.

Both are legitimate. The right one depends on whether you bought new or used, where you want the work done, and whether the dealer's price is competitive — which is exactly what a second written quote tells you.
What tends to be expensive to fix on a GMC?
These are the repairs GMC owners most often ask us about once the factory coverage has ended. They are common enough to plan for, not inevitable, and the costs are typical Canadian ranges for parts and labour — your shop and your region will vary.

Safety recalls are repaired free by GMC regardless of warranty status and are not listed here. Pre-existing conditions — a fault that already exists when coverage is bought — are excluded on every extended-warranty program, which is why coverage is arranged before symptoms appear. The 2.7L turbo Sierra and Canyon and the 1.5T Terrain carry a small mandatory turbo surcharge on our programs; Duramax diesels carry the diesel surcharge.
What does a GMC extended warranty cost in Canada?
