General information only. This page summarizes Sym-Tech's i-Select Plus brochure and the i-Select Plus contract we reviewed (form ISP-REG-VSC-20201020 E, a 2020 edition) as we read them on September 28, 2026. It isn't a contract or an offer of coverage, and it isn't legal advice. Coverage and terms can vary by province and change between contract editions. Where this page and your contract differ, your contract governs. Auto Warranty Experts is not the warranty provider or administrator.

i-Select Plus at a glance
| Coverage level | What's covered | Coverage ends by (maximum odometer reading) |
|---|---|---|
| Powertrain | Engine, factory turbo/supercharger, transmission, transfer case, front and rear drive axles. Seals and gaskets on those parts for vehicles under 160,000 km at sale (an option above that) | 240,000 km |
| Enhanced | Powertrain, plus steering, brakes (including listed ABS parts), electrical and air conditioning | 240,000 km |
| Ultimate | All parts except the contract's exclusions. Includes enhanced electrical, technology, hybrid (not the battery), emissions and safety-restraint coverage | 200,000 km |
| Ultimate Wrap | Ultimate-level coverage minus the powertrain parts, for vehicles that still have manufacturer powertrain coverage | 160,000 km |
| Ultimate Diesel/Turbo Wrap | Ultimate-level coverage minus the engine and turbo/supercharger, for vehicles with existing diesel or turbo engine coverage | 160,000 km |
The 2020 contract we reviewed also describes a Preferred level: Enhanced, plus suspension, enhanced electrical, fuel delivery and cooling, ending by 240,000 km. The current brochure lists only Powertrain, Enhanced and Ultimate plus the two wraps. If Preferred appears on your quote, your contract describes what it covers.
Deductible: your choice of $0, $50, $100, $200, $250, $300 or $500 per repair visit. Term and kilometres: shown on your quote. The kilometres are added to your odometer reading on the day you buy the contract, up to the maximum above.
If "exclusion-based" coverage is a new term, see exclusionary vs. named-component coverage. For what powertrain-only plans usually leave out, see what a powertrain warranty covers.
What's covered
Powertrain
- Engine: block, cylinder heads and internal lubricated parts, plus the water pump, fuel pump, oil pump, timing chain or belt, manifolds and engine mounts.
- Turbocharger/supercharger, factory-installed only.
- Transmission (automatic or standard): case and internal parts, torque converter, flywheel/flex plate, electronic shift control unit, cooler and mounts.
- Transfer case and its internal parts.
- Drive axles (front and rear): internal parts, drive shafts, universal and CV joints, axle bearings and locking hubs.
- Seals and gaskets on covered parts, for vehicles under 160,000 km at the time of sale.
Enhanced adds
- Steering: steering box or rack and pinion, power steering pump and hoses, tie rod ends and column shafts.
- Brakes: master cylinder, booster, calipers, wheel cylinders and hydraulic lines, plus listed ABS parts.
- Electrical: alternator, starter, wiring harness, ignition module, crank angle and knock sensors, wiper motors and switches, horns and O2 sensors.
- Air conditioning: compressor, condenser, evaporator, lines and hoses.
Ultimate covers every part except those the contract excludes. It includes these packages, which are paid options on lower levels:
- Enhanced electrical: instrument cluster, power window, seat and mirror motors, sunroof motor, door lock actuators and switches.
- Technology: back-up camera and sensors, video display screen, blind spot sensors, GPS/navigation, factory Wi-Fi/Bluetooth router, wireless charger and USB ports.
- Hybrid: inverter, drive motor, generator, hybrid cooling blowers and pumps, and hybrid control units and sensors. The hybrid battery and its cable/harness are excluded.
- Emissions: exhaust system, catalytic converter and emission canisters.
- Safety restraints: defective airbags, impact sensors, clock springs, seat belts and occupancy sensors.
The contract names Ultimate and Ultimate Wrap as including the technology, hybrid, emissions and safety-restraint packages. It doesn't name Ultimate Diesel/Turbo Wrap for these, so check your contract if you need them.
Other options (when shown on your contract): seals and gaskets for vehicles over 160,000 km at sale, commercial use (required if it applies), snow plow, lift kit (required if it applies; up to 6 inches combined, installed by the seller at the time of sale) and conversion equipment.
If a covered part fails and directly damages a part that isn't covered, the contract covers that resulting damage, as long as you've kept up the recommended maintenance.
Benefits included
| Benefit | What the contract pays |
|---|---|
| Rental | Up to $40 for every 8 labour hours of the repair, to a maximum of $280 per repair visit, plus up to 3 extra days for a parts delay on an internal engine, transmission or drive axle repair |
| Towing or road service | Up to $150 per occurrence, above any coverage from the manufacturer or elsewhere |
| Trip interruption | Hotel and meals up to $150 a day for up to 3 days ($450 per occurrence), when a covered breakdown more than 160 km from home keeps the vehicle overnight |
| Lost key or lockout | Up to $35 for locksmith services |
No deductible applies to these benefits.
Deductible and claim limits
- Per repair visit: you pay the deductible shown on your contract. If the box is blank, the contract says the deductible is $100. If a covered breakdown takes more than one visit, you pay it once.
- Repeat repairs: once a part has been repaired or replaced under the contract, future repairs to that same part carry no deductible.
- Per repair visit limit: the vehicle's Canadian Black Book value at the time of the repair.
- Total limit: the price you paid for the vehicle (not including tax, title and licence fees).
Things to know before you buy
- When you can buy it. The contract we reviewed can only be bought on the day you buy the vehicle, unless the vehicle still has its original full factory warranty on the day you buy the contract. If you've owned your car a while and the factory warranty has run out, the wording we reviewed doesn't allow it.
- When the term starts. The contract measures the term from the day you buy it, and the kilometres from that day's odometer reading. Repairs the factory warranty covers are excluded. The brochure says that if factory warranty remains, coverage "starts when that ends."
- Maintenance and receipts. Service the vehicle on the manufacturer's schedule that fits how and where you drive, and keep verifiable receipts showing the date and kilometres. Skipping maintenance can mean a denied claim.
- Wear within tolerance. A part isn't replaced if its wear is still within the manufacturer's tolerances.
- Not covered: battery and battery cables, clutch, glass, bulbs and fuses, audio and video equipment, brake rotors and drums, tires and wheels, body and trim, and maintenance items such as brake pads, drive belts, hoses, filters and wiper blades. Exhaust, emissions and airbag parts are covered only under Ultimate, Ultimate Wrap or the matching option.
- Damage and misuse. Collision, road hazards, weather, rust and contaminated fluids aren't covered. Neither is damage from misuse, sludge, missed maintenance, or driving on after warning lights or signs of failure.
- Modifications. Lift kits and tires that change the speedometer reading by more than 4% aren't covered unless the matching option is on your contract. Performance and other modifications aren't covered.
- Vehicle history. Any vehicle that has ever been a total loss, salvaged, rebuilt, grey-market or branded is excluded.
- Pre-existing conditions and breakdowns before coverage starts are excluded. So are repairs another warranty, insurance, recall or service bulletin is responsible for.
- Where it applies. Breakdowns and repairs in Canada and the continental United States.
- Who backs it. The 2020 contract we reviewed says Sym-Tech's obligations are guaranteed and insured by a policy from Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada of Hamilton, Ontario. If a covered claim isn't paid within 60 days of filing proof of loss, you can claim directly with the insurer. The current brochure says i-Select Plus is "underwritten by a licensed Canadian insurance company."
- Disputes. The contract asks you to raise a dispute with Sym-Tech in writing first. It also includes a binding-arbitration clause, and how that applies depends on your province's consumer law.
How a claim works
- Prevent further damage. Watch warning lights and gauges, and stop driving if continuing could make things worse.
- Take the vehicle to any licensed repair facility. Sym-Tech can help you find one.
- Register the claim before any repair. The service manager (or you, if they can't) calls Sym-Tech at 1-888-363-1101 and gets a reference number. Sym-Tech's claims line is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Unregistered repairs aren't covered, and the registered amount is the most that will be paid. For a major failure such as a slipping transmission, call before any teardown.
- Approve any teardown. If the shop needs to take something apart to find the cause, you approve it and pay for it if the failure isn't covered. Sym-Tech may inspect the vehicle first.
- Sign the repair order and pay your deductible. Sym-Tech pays the shop, or reimburses you, for the registered amount less the deductible. Paperwork must be submitted within 60 days.
- On the road: the shop can be paid by Sym-Tech's charge card (MasterCard or VISA). In some cases you may need to pay the bill and be reimbursed for the registered amount.
- Emergencies: if a repair has to be done when Sym-Tech can't be reached, call Sym-Tech within 5 business days of the repair.
Transfer, cancellation and renewal
- Transfer: once, only when you sell the vehicle privately. It can't be transferred if the vehicle is sold or traded to a dealership or another vehicle business. Within 30 days of the sale, send the transfer form, the new owner's details, the odometer reading and the $75 fee. Any remaining factory warranty and your maintenance records go to the new owner.
- Cancellation: the original contract holder can cancel at any time with a written request to the seller and a notarized odometer statement. Within the first 60 days, if no claim has been filed, you get a full refund. After that, the refund is pro-rated on time or kilometres (whichever is greater), less a $50 fee and any claims paid. If the contract was financed, the refund goes to the lender.
- Renewal: the contract allows a replacement contract at expiry if you ask at least 30 days or 1,600 km before it ends and the vehicle meets Sym-Tech's guidelines at the time. An inspection may be required.
Common questions about i-Select Plus
What is the difference between i-Select Plus Powertrain, Enhanced and Ultimate?
Powertrain covers the engine, factory turbocharger or supercharger, transmission, transfer case, drive axles, and seals and gaskets on vehicles under 160,000 km at the time of sale. Enhanced adds steering, brakes, electrical and air conditioning. Ultimate covers any part except the contract's listed exclusions, and includes the technology, hybrid, emissions and safety-restraint coverages that are paid options on lower levels. The wrap versions cover the Ultimate list minus the powertrain parts, or minus the engine and turbo for Diesel/Turbo Wrap, when those are still covered by the manufacturer.
Can I buy i-Select Plus for a car I already own?
Only if the vehicle still has its original full factory warranty on the day you buy the contract. The contract we reviewed is otherwise only available on the day you buy the vehicle. If your factory warranty has already run out and you bought the vehicle some time ago, ask us about other options.
Can I use my own mechanic with i-Select Plus?
Yes. The contract lets you take the vehicle to any licensed repair facility, and Sym-Tech can help you find one. Before any repair, the shop or you must call Sym-Tech to register the claim and get a reference number. Repairs that haven't been registered aren't covered, except for emergency repairs reported within 5 business days.
How does the i-Select Plus deductible work?
You choose $0, $50, $100, $200, $250, $300 or $500, and you pay it per repair visit, once per breakdown. Once a part has been repaired under the contract, future repairs to that same part have no deductible. The rental, towing, trip interruption and lockout benefits have no deductible.
How much will i-Select Plus pay for a repair?
Each repair visit is capped at the vehicle's Canadian Black Book value at the time of the repair. All claims and benefits together are capped at the price you paid for the vehicle, not including tax, title and licence fees. Within those limits, Sym-Tech pays the registered amount for covered repairs, less your deductible.
What isn't covered by i-Select Plus?
Maintenance and wear items, parts whose wear is still within the manufacturer's tolerances, pre-existing conditions, and damage from collisions, weather, misuse or missed maintenance. The contract also excludes batteries, clutches, brake rotors and drums, tires and wheels, glass and body parts, the hybrid battery, and any vehicle that has ever been a total loss, salvaged, rebuilt or branded. Repairs another warranty, recall or insurance is responsible for aren't covered.
Can I cancel or transfer i-Select Plus?
The original contract holder can cancel at any time in writing, with a notarized odometer statement. You get a full refund within the first 60 days if no claim has been filed, and after that a pro-rated refund less a $50 fee and any claims paid. If the contract was financed, the refund goes to the lender. You can transfer it once when you sell the vehicle privately, within 30 days of the sale, for $75.
Who backs i-Select Plus?
Sym-Tech Inc., operating as Sym-Tech Dealer Services, is the administrator. The 2020 contract we reviewed says its obligations are guaranteed and insured by a policy from Old Republic Insurance Company of Canada, and that you can claim directly with the insurer if a covered claim isn't paid within 60 days of filing proof of loss. The current brochure says i-Select Plus is underwritten by a licensed Canadian insurance company.
Will an i-Select Plus claim raise my car insurance premiums?
Sym-Tech's brochure says no: mechanical breakdowns covered by i-Select Plus aren't handled by your auto insurer, so using the coverage has no effect on your insurance rates.
