Extended Warranty Companies in Canada: How Ensurall, Obvi and Auto Warranty Experts Differ

Short answerThere are four ways to buy an extended car warranty in Canada: from the manufacturer through its dealers, from a dealership's finance office at purchase, from a company that sells its own plan online, or through a service that compares several programs. Ensurall (Toronto, family-owned since 1978) is a direct seller of its own plans; Obvi (Calgary, founded 2017) is an online insurance broker selling insurance-backed warranty policies; Auto Warranty Experts (Sault Ste. Marie and BC, operated by a licensed dealership) compares several insurer-backed Canadian programs in one written quote. None of the three models is automatically better. Below: what each company says about itself, and the six things to compare regardless of who you buy from.

VERIFY: Companies page: Ensurall's provinces are still unknown (they publish no list) and their Ontario page — our source for the AmTrust backing — was down on Sep 9. Obvi's row is fully confirmed against their own site.

The four ways an extended warranty is sold in Canada

Manufacturer plans through dealers, dealership finance offices, direct sellers with their own plan, and services that compare several programs — with a smaller number of administrators and insurers standing behind all of them.

It helps to see the structure before the names. Whoever sells you the contract, the company that approves and pays a claim is a program administrator, and behind the administrator is an insurer. Manufacturer plans (Toyota Extra Care, Honda Plus, Ford Protect and the rest — see our make pages) are the manufacturer's own, sold and honoured through its dealers. Dealership finance offices sell whichever one or two programs that store carries. Online, two further models exist: a company that sells its own plan directly, and a service that compares several administrators' programs for one vehicle. Ensurall is an example of the first; Obvi is an insurance broker with its own policies; we are an example of the second.

What each company says about itself

Descriptions are the companies' own characterizations, paraphrased, read from their own websites on September 9, 2026. Obvi's province list is quoted from its own extended-warranty page. Ensurall publishes no province list at all, so that cell says so rather than repeating a figure from a review site — if a province matters to you, ask the company. We are one of the three, so read our column with the same scepticism as the others.

How the three models actually differ for you

A direct seller offers one plan and knows it deeply; an insurance broker offers a policy regulated as insurance; a multi-program service offers a choice but adds a step. The contract, not the model, is what pays your claim.

Whichever model you choose, the contract you sign is with an administrator or an insurer, not with the seller, and it will pay exactly what it says.

The six things to compare whoever you buy from

Line up any two quotes on these before you look at the price.

  1. Coverage style — exclusionary ("everything except this list") or named-component ("only this list"). The single biggest hidden price difference.
  2. Per-claim and total limits — a plan with a $3,000 total limit is exhausted by one transmission.
  3. Deductible structure — flat per visit, or per component?
  4. Where it is honoured and who pays the shop — any licensed shop with the administrator paying directly, or dealer-only with reimbursement to you?
  5. Exclusions and waiting period — every program excludes pre-existing conditions; the rest of the list is what separates good from disappointing.
  6. Who stands behind it — the administrator and the insurer, named in the contract, and licensed in your province.

Common questions

Who are the extended warranty companies in Canada?

Manufacturers (through their dealers), dealership finance offices, direct sellers of their own plans such as Ensurall, online insurance brokers such as Obvi, and quote services such as Auto Warranty Experts that compare several administrators' programs. Behind all of them sit a smaller number of program administrators and their insurers, who actually approve and pay claims.

Is Ensurall a good extended warranty company?

Ensurall describes itself as Canada's extended car warranty company: family-owned since 1978, selling direct with no dealership markup, covering vehicles up to 10 years old or 200,000 km, including wear and tear, honoured at any licensed mechanic, with contracts administered in Ontario and backed by AmTrust Financial. It holds an A+ BBB rating. As with any provider, judge it on the contract — coverage style, per-claim limits, exclusions and deductible — rather than the marketing.

Is Obvi a good extended warranty company?

Obvi describes itself as a Canadian online insurance broker, founded in Calgary in 2017, selling insurance-backed extended warranty policies and vehicle replacement insurance with roadside, rental and travel benefits, entirely online. It is BBB accredited. Its policies are insurance products, which is a genuine structural difference from a service contract; ask which provinces it serves and read the policy wording as you would any insurance policy.

Is a broker or a direct seller better for an extended warranty?

Neither, automatically. A direct seller can only sell you its own plan; a broker or quote service can match one of several programs to your vehicle but adds a step. Either way, the contract is with an administrator or insurer, not the seller. Compare the six things that decide whether a policy pays — coverage style, per-claim and total limits, deductible structure, where it is honoured and who pays the shop, exclusions and waiting period, and the backing insurer — and let the contract decide.

Sean LaFleur

On the sales floor since 2014, operating partner in 2020, and majority owner and Dealer Principal of Sault Nissan since 2024. He started Auto Warranty Experts on a gap he kept seeing from the finance desk: coverage is easy to buy the day you buy the car, and two or three years later — when the factory warranty is actually about to run out — most of the market has no easy way to buy it at all. Online he can put several programs in front of one customer and shape the term, coverage and deductible around the vehicle in front of him, rather than selling whatever a single desk happens to carry. "Clients are often shocked by how affordable a warranty can be through us. That's our whole purpose." What he likes most is the long game: relationships that last, built on service worth coming back for. About the team →
